jallen,

"Nixon was impeached for many of the very same infractions as Clinton and I've never heard any argument that Nixon's infractions should not result in impeachment."

For God's sake! NIXON WAS NOT IMPEACHED. Articles of impeachment were drafted, NIXON was not impeached. And if you think that the impeachment articles were based solely on the Watergate coverup, you are terribly misinformed.

I won't argue any of the charges, the question is whether they are impeachable offenses. Reasonable and knowledgable people have disagreed on this point and have done so in good conscience.

Re: "The President should be held to the highest standard as his is the highest elective office." My apologies for apparent redundancy, but...Reasonable and knowledgable people have disagreed on this point and have done so in good conscience. Yours is the argument in favor of course, the other argument is that the Judicial has a higher standard as the office is appointed for life, whereas, the term of the Executive is limited, i.e., 4 years. The direct language in the Constitution seems to support the later rather than the former. I won't quote the relevant passages. If you are honestly interested in the point you'll look it up.

The charge of lack of research on your part is pointed to the Framers intent; your response has not offered anything that would might alter that supposition. I would be looking for either citations of the Constitution, letters by the Framers, etc..

"But more to the point, it is a weak excuse for an argument to say that because someone else got away with behavior which should have resulted in impeachment...." Absolutely true. But that wasn't the intended point. It was that the Congress did not deem immoral behavior, felonies or coverup as disqualifiers for public service in high offices of Government. Your point on Hamilton not being president is appropriate. Not conclusive, but appropriate.

Best Regards,
Jim
