Hi Paul,

I don't know whether you're interested, but here is Michael Murphy's take on Intel's earnings. I know he's not all that well thought of, but he's been awfully good on Intel. Anyways...

"Intel (Issue #403) will announce earnings on July 13 th .
The Street estimate is 53¢; we're looking for 58¢. INTC rose
this week, mostly on analyst speculation of increasing sales
and good cost control. Lehman Brothers named INTC as one
of its “10 Uncommon Values” for 1999. Prudential and
Merrill Lynch both upgraded their recommendations. Chief
Executive Craig Barrett sees a better second half of '99, and
so do we.
The deal to purchase Dialogic closed, and they also
acquired Softcom for cash (sorry –the price was undisclosed).
Intel has an agreement with Silicon Graphics to optimize
OpenGL for better 3D graphics and data visualization
workstations.
iCat (a division of INTC) is working with British
Telecomm to provide e-commerce services to 1.3 million
customers, mostly small to mid-size businesses.
One deal gone sour is with Via of Taiwan. INTC had
subcontracted with Via, but are now suing them for stealing
design plans. Incidentally, Via is now purchasing part of
Cyrix from National Semiconductor. Via sees itself becoming
a competitive threat for INTC – we think wait and see.
Hold INTC for our $75 target, coming soon."

If the increase in earnings is due only to cost cutting, then the stock will go down.
