That is not correct. Firmware is basically software that is resident in the EEPROM of an ASIC - Hence it is there whether or not the ASIC loses power. Firmware can be reprogrammed without replacing the component. via misundry means, depending on the type of EEPROM and associated connection.

Ancor's ASICs certainly have firmware on them as well. The difference is the amount and type of processing done by the hardware directly and that done by software/firmware assisted logic.

This is still quite simplified but you get the gist.
