So you're looking to have a subset of a thread

More like an Index to the thread.

Why not just start a new thread and do the same thing? You could include one or more posts each containing one or more links to the topic of choice. You could even annotate them with introductions.

Another thread is a possibility..I tried something similar once but it did not work out too well. It did not seem right having the index threads popping up in the 25 most recently posted to threads. I recall some formatting and editing problems when the previous posts were pasted into the last post. Too much labor.

To maintain an index on a thread you have to constantly carry forward the previous index so that the latest post has all the previous indexing.

Would you be the only one to be able to add to this sub-thread or would it be open to everyone?

Good question. Several options..Something in between would probably be a good option. If everyone could access the thread index someone may choose to be destructive. It is too much work for one person. Details....half a dozen volunteers that are given access to the common folders.

Anyone could make an individual list. There is a new function with personal messages in the beta version that has a similar functionality. You can create a folder and file a PM. You can organize messages in different folders. The only problem is you can only organize messages to you. The change required would be the ability to put any message in a thread in a folder...really no different than the existing message filing system.

Will every thread poster be able to have their own version of thread XYZ's best posts?

If they choose. Everyone can have a portfolio...then if one chooses the portfolio can be made public. Same idea...keep your own personal favorite posts in various folders and make them public if you choose. Different users would use the capability in different ways.

I think you need to work on this idea more.

Agreed. The basis for the idea is already in existence. All SI has to do is modify the existing message filing system to include any post in a thread...now it is only messages to an individual. Also a methodology to make the folder public...maybe in the profile to start.

If the methodolgy works then it can be improved upon with user input.

Just floating the idea...I will settle for a comprehensive search engine..a lot easier to explain and a lot less work.

Thanks for the feedback. It is probably an unworkable idea..unless I were in the drivers seat..then it would fly.

The Message Center Enhancement Proposal

I think you need to work on this idea more.

At the bottom of each post there could be a button.."File Message"

If one wants to add the post to a 'list' one clicks on the 'File Message' button and it takes you to the Message Center preferably to the folders for the specific thread. Naturally I am referring to the beta message center..the beta message center is almost exactly what is needed in its existing format.

When in the message center one files the message in a folder exactly as one files a PM in a folder. One can name the folder anything one wants to just as one can already do. In the existing format if one clicks on a folder you see a list of posts..same for the proposal..a list of posts in a named folder.

A few enhancements to the Message Center are necessary.

The folder should have status options. For example the originator of the folder can mark the folder 'read only' or 'full access' or other ( I do not know all of the NT privileges) Is there an option for adding files but not giving someone the option to delete files in NT? That would probably be the best option for team work in a common shared folder.

Now when a user clicks on the File Message button and is taken to the message center she/he sees a list of folders for the thread with name and status. Then just add the message to a common folder or an individual folder.

To view the messages in a list/category nothing changes. We already have the capability. Just click on one of the common or shared folders and review the posts in the folder of your choice.

Perhaps the beta version with its enhanced capability would be able to incorporate such a feature?? It seems like the feature parallels the existing message center format...just adds a little more capability. ie It extends the message center filing system to all posts in a thread in lieu of just posts and messages to an individual user.

If SI can do this I will join the beta rave review crowd<g>
