There is enormous pressure to look young and be extremely fit and very trim--a general focus on the exterior, rather than the soul, of the person. And young runaways from more conservative parts of the country can be treated very badly--used for their bodies, but not helped with adequate social programs. The Castro can be a very cruel place for male homosexuals.

What you imply is that the gay subculture in some ways bears a remarkable resemblance to the straight one <wry grin>

One of the more interesting things I have noticed is that even in San Francisco, it tends to be a very insular culture, very separatist in some ways. I have quite a number of gay acquaintances. In general, they will "mix" with heterosexual men in an open social milieu. At the gym, in a cocktail party for all the people on my block, etc. But I have never had a gay male couple accept a dinner invitation at our house, despite various attempts. I think there is always a concern, even here, that things will get uncomfortable somehow, that they will be patronized, even in San Francisco.
