Because the flow of wealth through-out the economy is not equal. The rich get richer and the bears stay the same or get poorer. <g> My final recommendation to the bears, buy any dip prior to next FOMC meeting. Benign economic data shall drive the DOW to 12,000 over the short term.

But seriously, you have to look at how the number is calculated. Look at mutual fund inflows by americans and then tell me americans couldn't liquidate some holdings to pay debt. The trap for the bears when viewing this statistic is to think that all americans will be cashing in their stock holdings at the same time. These are the best of times unless one is betting against the trend.
