"Tweaking the network"? Dan, what could you possibly mean? And what do these domain names have to do with it? Couldn't the company accomplish everything it needed with one .com domain name? Actually, yes it could although in practice it's using several.

I still doubt these domain names are integral to the "network".

Sure, they've registered the names. They have to keep their brand intact and give citizens of those countries a likely URL if they just happen to type it in. It would then be redirected.

When I type www.yahoo.ca it gets redirected to ca.yahoo.com, for example.

They're registering all of these names because they were burned by not being able to get messagemedia.de. That's what spurred them to action IMO.
