France Telecom High-Speed ADSL Offer Wins Approval Paris, July 12 (Bloomberg) -- France Telecom SA, France's biggest phone company, won government approval for technology that multiplies tenfold the speed at which it can offer Internet services over regular phone lines, starting this autumn, the government said. The state-controlled company will charge 265 French francs ($41) a month for unlimited use of the asymmetric digital subscriber line, or ADSL, service. The technology enables people to get high-speed data services, like Internet access, over traditional copper phone lines. Bringing ADSL to France is seen as key to expanding use of the Internet and building up electronic commerce by allowing businesses faster access. Until now, the high cost of local phone calls, which are billed on the amount of time spent online, has held back Internet use. France Telecom said it could spend up to 2 billion francs over three years installing the equipment. By autumn, France Telecom will have installed ADSL equipment in six of Paris's downtown neighborhoods as well as three Parisian suburbs. The company said it couldn't name its suppliers yet , but referred to the government's statement which said France's phone- equipment industry ''masters the technology well.'' Paris-based Alcatel SA says it is the world leader in ADSL. Clients wanting to use the ADSL services will have to buy or rent a special ADSL modem. They will be free to use Internet services from any company that offers services for ADSL. The French Economy, Finance and Industry Ministry said France Telecom had to give rival Internet service providers time to prepare their own ADSL offers before launching its services. It also must allow rivals to sell the ADSL offer, called Netissimo, to their clients so it doesn't distort competition. Last week, British Telecommunications Plc, the U.K.'s top phone company, ordered ADSL equipment from Alcatel, Europe's No. 2 phone-equipment maker, and Fujitsu Ltd. as part of its planned 5 billion-pound ($7.9 billion) investment in the Internet and electronic commerce.quote.bloomberg.com ---------- No surprise that ALA got a piece of FT, hopefully ORCT got a piece as well. Here's another win by ALA: PARIS (AFX) - Alcatel said it has received an order worth several million usd for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) equipment from Shanghai PTA for use in its motorway information project "Infoport".
