Lima shares end down on Argentina nerves
LIMA, July 12 (Reuters) - Lima stocks closed down Monday on low volume as worries over Argentina's political instability unnerved investors across the region, traders said.
The bolsa may rise slightly Tuesday on local trades because of increased liquidity in the financial system due to traditional wage bonuses in July increasing small investors' incomes, they added.
Monday, Lima's General Index (^IGRA - news) fell 1.52 percent to 1,664.18 points and the blue-chip Selective Index (^ISEL - news) was down 1.87 percent at 2,579.37 points, according to preliminary bolsa figures.
Argentine shares fell sharply Monday amid growing perceptions of weakness in the Peronist government as the October election draws near.
Monday's drop in Buenos Aires followed a decision by Congress last week to postpone collection of a controversial tax on vehicles after a three-day nationwide strike by truck owners. The work stoppage had caused food and fuel shortages.(cont)
