anyone here an nt whiz? i have a new machine, actually my second new machine in a month... i am running nt service pack 5 (just upgraded that today from sp4), on a pentium 3 450mhz machine with 128mb ram... 21" monitor

i got my new dell a month ago, and after one week, the screen started locking up... they thought it might be the video card, and replaced it, but it kept doing it.. then they replaced the mother board, still doing it...

they wanted me to wait 15 days for a refurbished replacement, and i did not like that idea, so i got an rma from dell, and ordered the same machine from another local company that i have done business with in the past... got it friday, set it up this weekend, and it had done the same locking up thing within one hour of getting it out of the box...

the only way to get out of this locked up state is to reboot he machine, cannot ctrl alt del... in addition, the dell did a blue screen thing on friday, and the new machine has done it about ten times, since yesterday... where it gets a kernal error and says it is doing a dump of physical memory...

needless to say i am extremely frustrated at this point... i will be calling the new company to send someone out tomorrow, but after my dell tech support experience i am not feeling very hopeful that it can be fixed...

one other thing i tried today out of desperation... i thought maybe the diamond viper card was the problem, so i bought a different 16 bit video card today and installed it, it didn't work at all, just blacked out the machine after rebooting to the blue nt loading screen...

i really only know a little, probably just enough to be dangerous!! any ideas would be very much appreciated... thanks...

kathy :)

Stuff running with Windows ... (Part 2)

Try this: Fire up Microsoft System Information, (in the System Tools folder) click Tools, and select System Configuration Utility. Pick the Startup tab and you'll see a list of Start-Up candidates with checkboxes. This gives you control over what starts automatically.

Sure beats a registry edit.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. You'll notice the selections match the registry key given in my last post, PLUS, the contents of your StartUp folder.
