I find it interesting that you feel the same as I. That we aren't sure what those teachers did- but that it had more to do with making us value ourselves and our potential and the process of learning in a certain way than with the precise learning they stuffed into our heads. I can say with certainty it had nothing to do with religion--Or the Ten Commandments-- Or prayer-- None of that stuff, but I do think it had something to do with a way of approaching life with integrity. I guess she taught me to love the excitement of learning for its own sake, too. But it was more than that. SHe lived what seemed to be a very GOOD, consistent life.
I realized in college just how extraordinary she had been and I went to visit her over Christmas vacation. She was very glad to hear that she'd been effective, but surprised- it never had occurred to her that she was having that kind of effect. She was just--- teaching!
And after I'd complimented her, she immediately changed the topic to me, and what I was learning in college, and what did I think of Ovid, and why-
she was still teaching.
