Quite a site eh? What did you think?

Hmm. What I think is that excitextreme.com is a good lesson to other portals considering making a broadband portal. Unfortunately, it's a lesson in what not to do.

I figure this thing from Excite probably serves its purpose as a marketing tool. It's packed with enough eye-candy to be immediately appealing when just the right machine connected to just the right network is running on a display machine in a shopping mall somewhere. Since it was done in cooperation with Intel, it's designed to make the current generation of machines look wimpy. My PentiumII 233 with only 198 Megs of RAM isn't quite enough to give the bloated Excite applet its due.

Beyond that limited marketing purpose, the site strikes me as near disaster. How could anyone think the bizzarre dancing books would make for easier or more friendly navigation? It's pure gimmickry. In that sense, it brings to mind some of the dreadfully over-designed pages that cropped up in the early days of Navigator. Time's Pathfinder provided a notorious example. This thing deserves a place next to the original Pathfinder in the hall of shame.

A far better example of moving a portal toward broadband is provided by speed.snap.com which emphasizes broadband content over gimmicks.
