PMS Witch, Mark or anyone,

My brother-in-law has been with tech support with Gateway about getting his problems fixed with getting on the net. First one tech had them download a patch, that didn't fix the problem. Called back and got a different tech and he couldn't see why the first guy had them download that patch and recommended a different one. That one didn't work either. The problem with this BS is they aren't aren't on the net so had to come to my house and download to a floppy. (70 miles round trip.)

Now the third rep said they have to reformat the hard drive and then reload Win95 from scratch. They told them to back up everything they wanted to save because a format would wipe everything out.

Question I have is what do we have to back up. They have a Colorado tape backup. The only application programs they use that would have important data to back up would be like Quicken and Office. That's no problem to back up. But what other things are necessary. Like Autoexec.bat and Command.com or does that regenerate itself with a new reload of Win95.

Also I told him to call Gateway and have them send up the most current version of Win95 with all the patches. Their computer is 3 years old and have never did any updates to Win95 since they got it. No sense in loading a dinosoar back in.

And help on what we should do before a format of the hard drive would be appreciated.

PS...last night when they were here, they got mad and ordered a new computer from Gateway. Ordered a 400MZ with 64Meg, 9.3 Gig hard drive, Zip drive, Win98, DVD CDROM, and some software. But they still want the other one fixed so their son can take to college some day.
