Well, "colored" won't do, because members of other races sometimes refer to themselves as "people of color" (e.g., Southeast Asians). "Black" won't really do, because, as you point out, few are really "black." "Afro-Americans" may stick around, since it is accurate, if over-long.

At least, they are finally getting to decide what to call themselves, rather than having to accept what other people call them. I suppose that's progress. :-)
