Tench, I don't plan on 'taking' a free PC from anyone, but I wonder if there aren't more insidious agenda's by those free box distributors. First and foremost there WILL be a plethora of forced advertising on a free PC. Secondly, the "contract" that a giftee [not a consumer, they didn't buy anything - does this bypass consumer protection laws?] assumes when taking delivery of a free box, probably requires certain activities for the "free" box. Can an end-user wipe the disk(s) and run his/her own software? like remove windows and rely on linux? delete any/all "boxmakers" applications, files, dll's etc etc? Thirdly [if I am counting correctly], the boxmaker may [probably, and most certainly] be monitoring the use of the free PC, and keeping tabs on user activities, and especially what they view on the web, amount of time spent on a given site, and much more. This information, of course, would be easily collected, and transferred to a "home" site daily, or more frequently, as the end-user was accessing the internet. Just a thought.

tench, the rev pie for pcs isn't growing for all intents and purposes. some companies can do well for short periods of time in this environment - assuming it doesn't get worse as the trend is from massive growth to good growth to no growth to... everyone's growth is slowing. dell's growth is slowing and they mike dell said it would slow even more. he said mid single digit sequential growth which is slower than current rates. nope, everyone isn't losing money yet. but the signs are on the wall.
