Please read my post about lidocaine. It's not just a virology lesson that is needed here, it's pharmacology as well.

Zicam is applied locally where the virus attaches. <1> The virus in the nasal cavity attaches to zicam and cannot enter the cell through the normal ICAM door. <2>SOme zicam is absorbed into the cell( do not misinterpret that as oral absorption) and the virions bind to it and cannot get out. <3> Zicam has a membrane-stabilizing effect that impede viral transport across the celll membrance. Cold-eze has to diffuse there and requires (and/or results in, anyway) some oral absorption. Thus, higher doses, less compliant patients, unsatisfied children and poor clinical results.

Cold-eze - higher dosage, bad taste, upset stomach.
Zicam - lower dosage, works at the site, no bad taste and no upset stomach. Admittedly, some people do not like nasal sprays but the majority of people tolerate them well.

All this dd can be done away from Mr. Wexler's thread.
