That is a common psychobabble cliche, with just enough truth in it to lend it specious credibility.

Life offers an infinite variety of ways of being hurt by words, or implications, or nuances, or absences of words; and only some of them require a belief in their 'truth' or 'respect' for the speaker.

I'll give just one example: You can know that untrue words spoken against you will be believed by others, and that may be painful to you.
