<IBM does a deal with PLAB.>

NEW YORK (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news) said Sunday it was looking to develop smaller and more powerful computer chips through a partnership with Photronics Inc. (Nasdaq:PLAB - news), the top U.S. manufacturer of the prints used to create the chips' tiny circuit patterns.

''By working with Photronics, they gain access to our technology and expertise, and we are funding the development, rather than them having to spend their own resources,'' said IBM spokesman Chris Andrews.

The demand for faster, smarter computer chips has put pressure on chip makers to create more intricate photomasks -- lithographic prints which are projected onto silicon much in the same way photos are printed on paper. These designs are used to create the actual circuitry.

Details of the designs have become so small that current methods are hard-pressed to image the tiny features onto the silicon wafers.
