Now, Lycos is running its own auction site. I checked it out, and will predict right now that this will be a big failure for Lycos. It is a complete mess, and they make you go through many layers to get to the category you want. Eveybody wants to be in the online auction business these days. But, eBay is far and away the leader in this space. Besides eBay, the market is very fragmented. While there may be some short-term distraction issues, I see every new entry in the auction space as just another entry that will attract new auction buyers, who will eventually end up using eBay. All these secondary layers are helping eBay grow this space, and as king of the jungle, eBay will enjoy the spoils.
