Covad Broadens Portland's Choice of DSL Service to Area Businesses and Homes
Business Wire - July 12, 1999 06:15
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 1999--

Covad is the First to Offer Consumers an Alternative to the Local Telephone Company in the Portland Area

Covad Communications (Nasdaq:COVD), a leading provider of high-speed Internet and network access solutions, today announced the availability of its Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) based services in the Portland area for both businesses and home users.

Covad is the first to bring home users in Portland up to Vancouver a high-speed connection to the Internet that is easier to order and install than through the local telephone company.

Covad has established strategic relationships with Portland regional and national Internet Service Providers (ISPs), making it easier to order, install and manage high-speed Internet service.

Currently, Covad's services are available through local Portland-based ISPs Transport Logic (www.transportlogic.net), Pacifier Online Data Service (www.pacifier.com), and Easy Street Online Services (www.easystreet.com). Covad's services are also available through national ISPs Concentric (Nasdaq:CNCX) (www.concentric.net), Flashcom (www.flashcom.com), and Speakeasy, Inc. (www.speakeasy.net).

In addition to the Portland metropolitan area, Covad's network will service up to 625,000 homes and businesses from Hillsboro to Gresham and from Oregon City to Vancouver, Wash.

Covad's DSL service allows high-speed access to the Internet and corporate networks through the copper phone wires found in businesses and homes today. DSL offers customers a dedicated and secure connection. Since this high-speed connection is always available, the need to dial in each time a user wants to browse the Internet or download email is eliminated as well as the delays, busy signals and non-connects typical in dial-up service.

"Covad is aggressively building its footprint in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan areas," said Joe Devich president and general manager of Covad's Western Region. "This breadth of coverage means that the availability of DSL will be plentiful in Portland communities. It also ensures that both business and home DSL users will have the bandwidth required for today's high-speed needs and tomorrow's promise of media-rich applications."

With data connections up to 50 times faster than 28.8K modems, Covad's TeleSpeed(R) service is a great solution for businesses. For home users, Covad's TeleSurfer(TM) service provides uses with connections up to 25 times the speed of most dial-up solutions providing the highest quality and widely available residential option for high-speed Internet access.

TeleSurfer(TM) provides residential users privacy, flexibility and reliability advantages over the services offered through cable companies. Unlike cable companies that use a shared line between neighbors, a connection through Covad is dedicated to a single user through a point-to-point network.

Users can also take advantage of Covad's online Customer Care Center where customers can check service availability, enter orders, check order and network status, and download software upgrades.
