>>Hope you like your house!<< Thanks, I do like it. :-)

>>First, use your tape to make a full backup of everything. Worst case is you'll need
to return to what you've got now, warts and all. At least it works. (A bit) As well,
make a backup of your 'personal' stuff. (Two backups, one full, one 'personal')<<

When you say, "full backup of everything", are you talking about just WIN95 directory?? Since he has a Colorado tape backup, are you saying I should have that on tape also?

>>Second, make a bootable floppy. This floppy must 'see' your CD and your tape.
No point having a backup if you can't use it.<<

We are talking about my brother-in-laws computer. He has WIN95 and I never used WIN95 since I went from WIN3.1 to WIN98 myself. Is there a utility on WIN95 to do a bootable floppy?

>>Third, put the 'tools' onto this floppy. FORMAT, FDISK, SCANDISK, EDIT, and
any others you think you may need, such as the program to restore from your
backup. Richard has posted on this thread suggested contents for this floppy a few
weeks ago. Make sure it boots and the tools work. (Contain support files too)<<

When you make a bootable floppy, doesn't it put FORMAT, FDISK, SCANDISK, EDIT, on the floppy as part of the disk? Also, I have tried finding Richards post but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreaciated.

>>Next, try reloading Windows ON TOP of your current system.<<

We already tried that and it didn't solve our problem. That's why the rep at Gateway suggested we do a clean sweep and start over.

>>If a fresh Windows doesn't do the trick, you'll need to format your disk and reload
windows onto a clean disk. If you need to do this, please post again. It's quite a
job.<<

PMS, I am willing to go up to my brother-in-laws (35 miles) and help him do this clean sweep and reinstall of WIN95 if nothing more than for the experience. My problem is when I'm there I won't have access to the net to have you good people hold my hand. With their new computer coming, it's no big deal if we screw it up and it takes a while to get it running. But I would rather play around with his computer than mine. (selfish thought, huh?)

Does anyone know of a good write up that walks you through a reformating of the hard drive?

Thanks for your patience on this long post. Just trying to think of everything before going through this process. Sure wish they still had hard copies of Operating System like they use to.

TIA....H Peterson
