barnesandnoble.com Launches "We-commerce" Revolution

Customers Can Now Become Booksellers and Earn Money For Themselves and Charities

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 1999-- Be Free, Inc. and Mail.com, Inc. Partner in First of Its Kind Program

barnesandnoble.com (Nasdaq: BNBN - news), a leading Internet commerce site for book lovers, today announced the launch of MybnLink, an innovative marketing program that will enable online customers to become booksellers, earning money for themselves, or one of five participating charities -- the American Red Cross, CARE, First Book, National Wildlife Federation®, and Special Olympics.

''We're proud to introduce this revolutionary new program that will transform e-commerce into we-commerce,'' said Jonathan Bulkeley, CEO of barnesandnoble.com. ''We know that readers like to recommend books to their friends. Now they can do so via e-mail -- as booksellers raising money for some important charities.'' The MybnLink program also allows members to accrue cash credits for their personal accounts.

MybnLink is the first affiliate program of its kind designed exclusively for individual e-mail users. By directing anyone with an e-mail address to barnesandnoble.com through links in their e-mails, MybnLink members will earn five percent of any sales generated on the site through their personal MybnLink. Members can choose to keep their earnings as booksellers or donate them to one of five national charities. barnesandnoble.com will donate an additional one percent of all sales generated in the MybnLink program to First Book, a leading literacy foundation that gives disadvantaged children the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

barnesandnoble.com's strategic e-mail partner in this new venture is Mail.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: MAIL - news). Be Free Inc., provider of affiliate marketing technology and services, is barnesandnoble.com's technology partner.

Extending WE-commerce to the general public

Thanks to software innovations, MybnLink members should find the process of participation simple. After members register at www.mybnlink.com, they will receive hyperlinks (the element in an electronic document, usually underlined, that connects to a particular Web page), which can be pasted into their e-mails. When their family, friends or colleagues click on the links, they will be directed to various locations on the barnesandnoble.com site, including the Books home page, the Music home page, the Book Search page, Bargain Books, Out of Print, and the Gift Center. (Commissions are earned on all products sold; not just books and out-of-print books, but music, magazines, videos, and software.) Members can place an automatic link in any e-mail they send. There is no charge to participate in the program. If prospective members don't have their own e-mail address, or if they wish to have a dedicated MybnLink e-mail address, they can register for a free e-mail account at www.mail.com.

barnesandnoble.com processes and ships the orders, and handles customer service and billing. The members of MybnLink - or the charity they designate - earn the commission. Payments will be made every three months, for the prior quarterly period. (Commissions less than $10 will be carried over to the next quarter.)

Technological support

The MybnLink program is supported by technology from Be Free, Inc., that provides members with reports on sales and earnings updated daily, that members can view online in a password-protected site. ''Be Free is delighted to provide the technology backbone to barnesandnoble.com for this e-commerce enterprise. Together, we are leading an initiative that extends commerce to the e-mail environment,'' said Tom Gerace, co-founder and executive vice president, Be Free.

Mail.com, Inc. will be the e-mail partner for the MybnLink program. Members can easily obtain a free e-mail address at www.mail.com. ''E-mail is the perfect vehicle for promoting the MybnLink program and making it a success. Mail.com is proud to participate with barnesandnoble.com in a program that supports both of our strategic business objectives as well the greater community,'' said Lon Otremba, COO of Mail.com, Inc.
