You really should read it, although it appears you have lived it in part<g>...Machine politics, however corrupt, served a useful function, I believe, in helping to Americanize and look out for the interests of immigrants and internal migrants. In the end, I would probably have been a reformer, but not without some regret that the old loyalties and community bonds had to bend...
