As with all things the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

For a while in the 1980s Pepsi actually exceeded Coke in sales.

That is a perceptive statement, IMHO. There is certain amount of brand equity that comes into play but most retail customers pick up a "soda", usually some flavor of Coke or Pepsi. This is somewhat akin to what you see on the retail market share of Celeron Vs. K6.

The high volume institutional soda customers go for Coke or Pepsi for a whole host of reasons that are pretty complex. This is is somewhat similar to the higher volume business PC segment!

Now, to make sure I don't come across as dragging this comparison too far, let me state that, unlike sodas, Microprocessors are far from being commodities. But, nonetheless, a good indication why a #1 (Coke or Intel) remains a #1 for a long period of time.
