Some of the routes I measured with my car odometer, driving the route. Some of them I estimated by looking at a map.

I used to listen to tapes, myself. I think the meditative state is something you develop over time. For sheer boredom, nothing beats swimming laps in a pool. I use a face mask and a snorkle, and look at bubbles, and the stuff on the bottom of the pool.
