Japan's PC Sales in Second Week of June Remain Stable at Shops July 12, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales in shops in Japan remained stable in the second week of June. According to information service company GfK Japan Ltd., PC sales during the second week of June 1999 at approximately 2,000 household electronic appliances stores increased by 1.9 percent in units and 1.8 percent in value from the previous week. Compared to the same week a year ago (June 15-21, 1998), increases were 73.9 percent in units, 73.2 percent in value. The average sales price dropped by 208 yen from last week's 224,504 yen to 224,296 yen. The retail market for PCs has been less dynamic, as PC makers just introduced their new models around this time. Nevertheless, sales growth during the three weeks after the fourth week of May is greater than the same period last year, when the planned delivery of Windows 98 halted purchases. As for the average sales price, the price for desktop PCs dropped by 1,653 yen from last week and that of notebooks increased by 1,121 yen. Among desktops, popular liquid-crystal display models are lower in price. GfK Japan collects POS data from 55 IT-related retail sales companies centering on high-volume stores specializing in home electric appliances. It covers about 3,200 stores (as of April 1998) throughout Japan. In cooperation with GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access provides weekly reports of PC sales volume and value. The sales data has been based on the same 41 companies (with about 2,000 stores) since April 1996. The number of PCs sold at the 2,000 stores is estimated to comprise about 10 percent of gross domestic shipments, and when limiting the sales to retail sales channel, the share comes to about 25 percent of such shipments.
