Which other "major" composers before Bernstein were rumored to be gay? The field of music has not seemed to have produced too many that I know of. Or at least they covered their tracks pretty well, as was certainly the habit in those days.

It is also speculated by some that he committed suicide due to the fact that the Pathetique was panned in its first performance, perhaps the first work he had written in a long while that had received that reaction. And that this, stacked on top of a bunch of other things he was feeling morose about, may have kicked him over the edge. Would seem a bit excessive a reaction though.
