RE: >>> What happened in early '98 to start the stock's descent? <<<

CENT's largest supplier was Solaris. In early '98, Monsanto decided it wanted to sell Solaris. In late June '98, Monsanto sold Solaris to Scotts. As a result, CENT needed to renegotiate a new deal with Scotts before the existing agreement expired in September '99.

The ownership change created significant fear that Scotts would take some or all the Solaris business direct. The stock reacted and steadily drifted lower while the shorts refused to take any prisoners along the way. The news we're reading today is the long awaited result of those renegotiations. Perhaps we'll soon see if the "sell the bummer rumor, buy the bummer news" theory proves correct. I think it will.
