Sumitomo, EMCORE to manufacture InGaP epi for HBT devices:

gaasnet.com

More old news (May 18), but I don't believe it's been posted.
It's Sumo-timo! They claim to be "the world's leading manufacturer of GaAs and indium phosphide (InP)." Now we'll see how they stack up against Kopin.

Some numbers from Strategies Unlimited:

...in 1998 HBT epitaxial wafer shipments were the fastest growing segment of the GaAs epitaxial wafer market. HBT wafer shipments grew 72% over 1997 levels, reaching nearly 400,000 square inches.

Re: buyout speculation. The announcement from Sumitomo indicates that HBT is now generating volumes high enough to attract the interest of the big boys. Kopin's HBT business would be attractive to a buyer like this, imo. In some ways, it would have been less complicated than what they're doing with EMCORE. As for the microdisplay business, potential buyers may wait for a shake-out, then look at the winners? They'll pay a higher price for lower risk, I believe.
