Thanks for the post. Looks positive overall.
One thing that is puzzling is where did the 38% number come from ?
33c EPS to 53c EPS is more than 60% increase. Does anyone know
whether the 33c number for Jun'98 is wrong ? Or did they just get the math wrong ?

Ramesh

Stephen, Journalists don't take math courses....

re:"Street expects Intel to report a 38% rise in second-quarter net

A service of Semiconductor Business News, CMP Media Inc.
Story posted 10:30 a.m. EST/7:30 a.m., PST, 7/12/99

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Intel Corp. will be cranking out good news here tomorrow afternoon (July 13), if analysts have it figured right.

The world's largest chip maker will announce second quarter earnings after the markets close, and analysts surveyed by First Call Corp. are expecting a 38% rise to 53 cents a share. That compares with a net of 33 cents or $1.17 billion that is reported for the second quarter last year."

(.53-.33)/.33=.6061 or 61% growth --- correct math

(.53-.33)/.53=.3773 or 38% growth ---- incorrect math

Of course this means that Editors don't take math courses either and headline writers probably don't check anything.

AMD will never be a real problem for Intel. AMD stock was one of the worst yielding stock for the past fifteen years! Like National Semiconductor, I wouldn't be surprised if AMD quit the PC chip business in five years. AMD reported horrible losses lately. INTC's price cut will further squeeze AMD. There is no point in gaining market share if it hurts your bottom line. AMD has no other winners to offset its losses. They are in much bigger trouble than INTC.

stephen - <On the other hand, Needham & Company analyst Tad LaFountain says that competition from AMD could be heating up. AMD's new K-7 chip, which will begin shipping next month, will be faster than any of Intel's chips and could create "real problems" for Intel, LaFountain says.>

Our gloomy thread mate (he posts on the AMD thread in fits and spurts) said exactly the same thing about the K6, I believe. I suppose the K6 could have been considered to pose "real problems", but the K6 "problem" has apparently been effectively addressed.

Does anybody know if he's ever said anything good about Intel?

Hey Tad, "problems" are meant to be embraced, addressed, and solved. Even "real" ones.
