Merrill's insight into the recovery of the semi-equipment industry....

Merrill Lynch & Co.
July 12, 1999

An excerpt from Merrill's weekly update:

Its looks official the industry downturn is over. For the first time in several years AMAT has once again started to cater some internal meetings. Free drinks, cookies and an occasional sandwich had been one of the first casualties of the cost cutting programs that most companies implemented in 1997. But after 3 strong quarters and record sales and orders AMAT has agreed reward its employees with free food.

Ian, local TV news had James Morgan from SEMIcon West on. He said what you'd expect. So now everyone knows the semi equipment biz
is turning up, just when informed investors are hesitant to buy at these prices.

INTC reports tomorrow after, but you
knew that.
