Lucent Technologies' elemedia First to Offer H.323 Version 2 Gatekeeper Platform to Industry At No Cost MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1999--elemedia(TM), the Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) multimedia software venture -- today announced that it will be the first software vendor to offer its industry-leading H.323 Version 2 gatekeeper platform to industry developers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) vendors free of charge. Developers will be able to download the elemedia gatekeeper platform from www.elemedia.com on July 15. elemedia's gatekeeper platform incorporates the award-winning elemedia H.323 protocol stack and is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) H.323 Version 2 standard for audio and video exchange over IP networks. Gatekeeper software is considered the ''brains'' of an IP telephony network and is the key component that authenticates and routes IP Telephony calls within the network. elemedia's gatekeeper software supports all of the mandatory and optional H.323 Version 2 features, while also providing a flexible and scaleable architecture required for carrier-class applications. Several leading service providers, including AT&T, as well as leading vendors, including Hewlett-Packard, have already acquired commercial licenses for elemedia's Gatekeeper Platform. elemedia's gatekeeper platform greatly expands the interoperability, reliability and functionality of a wide range of voice, data and visual communications over the Internet, intranets and local area networks. As part of a commitment to encourage standards-based innovations, elemedia will make the binary code for its GK2000S Release 1.4XX software available at no cost. In 1998, elemedia made its award winning H.323 Protocol Stack available at no cost to industry developers and researchers. As a result, more than 1000 developers in the industry are now building applications based on H.323 standards. ''Growing the population of standards-based Internet telephony products enables the industry to develop interoperable products at a faster pace. Our gatekeeper platform has been proven to interoperate with the industry's major H.323 gateways and clients. We want to make it as easy as possible for developers and OEM vendors to try our gatekeeper platform,'' said Joe Mele, president of elemedia. ''We believe that our gatekeeper platform offers more features and has better interoperability than any other platform available on the market today.'' In November of 1998, elemedia announced creation of an Interoperability Lab located at its headquarters in Holmdel, NJ. In the following six months, elemedia demonstrated interoperability of its gatekeeper platform with the industry's major gateways and clients. ''elemedia has worked tirelessly to provide standards-based, interoperable products to the industry. By providing free access to one of the most important components of the IP telephony network, elemedia is demonstrating its further commitment to this market,'' said Jeff Pulver, president of analyst firm Pulver.com. ''We expect to see greater H.323 developer activity as a result of this release.''
