I think Melinda Gates was in charge of "Bob" as the product manager, if memory serves. At a project review meeting, Bill G. took one look at Bob, got jealous, and married the girl, leaving the project to founder <pun intended>.

QwikSand is correct. Bill's wife, Melinda with the help of a prof. from Stanford produced, "Bob".

I wonder if "Bob" was the name of a family pet. Sometimes, you wonder where they get these names.
