Maybe the mother kicked it out because it was sick. I think you did the right thing trying to save it. I would have done the same thing. At least you kept it from being eaten by cats or hit by a car, and it died in a clean, safe place.

You tried and that was very nice. I found a tiny dead one on my front walk yesterday evening. I felt pretty bad about that as well. I just stood looking at it and thinking this is such a shame.
