Tony,

Call it Jack vs. the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, or David vs. Goliath fandom. Some like to find overwhelming underdogs and root for them, even with their wallets. Maybe they take pleasure in believing they've found something no-one else has. I personally despise throwing away earned money (or any other kind, for that matter).

There is also the fondness for the simple-minded maxim:

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.

Readers of this board have been repeatedly told how the Athlon is a better mousetrap and therefore, they conclude, will take away Intel's business. These are undoubtedly scientific-types (please no offense intended) who overemphasize their contribution to the success of a product. As we have seen repeatedly, there are myriad factors in determining a product's success. Even if it were true – and this is hotly disputed – that Athlon is superior, it would not be a strong enough argument to merit investment in AMD. [In my opinion, which is biased by my finance, business and investment background.]
