please name the ones which started out with sound financials and which ones began with profits. Thanks.

The former is subjective, but I can start the latter list with EBAY. (Which is not to say they're something you want to be in right now.)

Of course, in the old days, a company would tend to wait until they were actually profitable before going public. Not these days, of course, when waiting for that means risking missing out on the mania.
