Socket Card for Windows CE Combines Bar Code Scanning and Ethernet; The
Ethernet/Bar Code Wand Card Works in the PC Card Slot of Handheld PCs

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

NEWARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 1999--Socket
Communications Inc. (OTC BB:SCKT)(OTC BB:SCKTW)(PCX:SOK) today
announced the first shipments of the Ethernet/Bar Code Wand Card, a PC
Card that combines Welch Allyn's SCANTEAM(TM) 6180 bar code
scanner/decoder wand with a 10BaseT Ethernet port.
The latest member of Socket's Battery Friendly(TM) line of
plug-in products for Windows CE-based computers, the new combo card
streamlines the mobile data collection process by allowing users to
scan bar code data into a Handheld PC and then transfer the
information instantly to a corporate network via any Ethernet
connection.
The card offers users unprecedented levels of portability,
accuracy, speed and location independence for applications involving
inventory control, warehouse management, shipping and receiving, field
inspection and audits, asset tracking, clinical control duties,
patient care, route delivery, market research and other mobile
environments where bar codes are used to manage information.
When users insert the Ethernet/Bar Code Wand Card into the PC
Card slot of any Windows CE-based Handheld PC and launch Socket's
"keyboard wedge" software, they can use the permanently attached
pen-like wand to scan bar code symbols directly into any Windows
application as though the data had been entered manually.
Users can then use the removable Ethernet cable to upload the
collected data to a corporate network at high speed via any active
Ethernet connection. The Windows CE synchronization software built
into Handheld PCs eliminates the need for special data transfer
utilities.
By combining a bar code scanner and an Ethernet port, Socket's
card offers Handheld PC users the benefits of speed, accuracy and
location independence. Bar code scanning is 15 times faster and 10,000
times more accurate than manual data entry. Ethernet is 500 times
faster than a Handheld PC's serial connection and, unlike a serial
connection, allows users to synchronize data from anywhere on a
company network.
A unique feature of Socket's Ethernet software is that it allows
users to specify any program to be launched automatically whenever the
PC Card is inserted into a Windows CE-based computer. User's can
choose to run desktop synchronization programs such as Microsoft's
ActiveSync or specialized applications such as a forms-based program
for bar code scanning.
By eliminating the need to navigate Windows CE's graphical user
interface in order to execute a favorite program, the new software
saves time, reduces errors and simplifies user training.
One of the first customers to deploy the Ethernet/Bar Code Wand
Card is Dynamic Healthcare Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:DHTI), a leading
provider of mission-critical healthcare information systems for
clinical services departments and facilities.
"Socket's Ethernet/Bar Code Wand Card has made a significant
contribution to the efficiency of our new Radiology Scan Station
Solution, which is now in use at Medical College of Virginia," said
Michael L. Carlay, senior vice president, sales and marketing for
Dynamic. "The combination of a bar code wand and an Ethernet
connection on a single card vastly simplifies the logistics of
collecting and consolidating healthcare data."
"As the market for Windows CE-based computers has matured, we are
seeing increased demand for plug-in cards that can operate on any
platform and that provide multiple functions," said Peter Phillips,
Socket's director of marketing. "The Ethernet/Bar Code Wand Card ties
together two of our primary product initiatives in a package that we
believe will become the model for a growing family of multi-purpose
cards for both vertical and mainstream markets."
Socket's new Ethernet/Bar Code Wand Card is available now and has
a suggested list price of $499. For a complete listing of Socket's
