Hi Tim,

Thanks for your input, nice to hear from someone who I consider a real expert on the matter. When all is said and done, I am most motivated to try to avoid dealing with the RBOC to the greatest extent possible. The amount of FUD they are generating makes me feel that the sooner I get away from them the better. One example: In my monthly bill about 3 months ago there was a brochure offering me a free ADSL modem! Wow, I thought great, I'll sign up today. I called the 800 # USW provided to place the order. The woman on the other end said that she could not confirm that I was a USW customer! I told her that the bill in my hand was pretty convincing to me. She remained unconvinced. She said that xDSL was not available in my area and gave me another number where I got yet more run around.
A week later I ran into the PR guy I mentioned upstream and he lied about the provisioning of LADAs in Central Oregon. My impression of the company is that the responses I get from them are either uninformed, inaccurate or intentionally falsified. It is an infuriarating situation for which the best solution I'm sure is to abandon hope of getting satisfaction from them.

Your comments regarding the grief to be expected in setting up the ISDN service are exactly why I haven't pursued that course of action.

My estimate of $500 all in to set up was also contested by the techie at the local ISP. He felt I could get a cheapie modem at eBay and do the deal for under a hundie. After hearing a ton of stories about all the gotchas in setting this up, I just used my usual estimating judgement and decided x5 should just about cover it. I'm sure that on my 20th installation of an ISDN system it would be considerably cheaper. I just added my educational expenses to the estimate.

Ciao, Ray
