God yes- Brazil was really disturbing. Kafka wasn't much better. And I am kinda sorry I saw The Butcher Boy even if it was a really good movie. Same with Night of the Living Dead.

Loved both Brazil and 12 Monkeys...Brad Pitt's best performance, incidentally....I have seen Brazil perhaps half a dozen times, perhaps more....

Your observation that you hated "Brazil" and "The Twelve Monkeys" was enough to bring me out of lurking, which I usually do on this thread. Gilliam is a dark comedic genius, IMO, and "Brazil" is a masterpiece. Jonathan Pryce was superb, DeNiro was solid, his best comedic role, and the sets were astonishing. As a depiction of the darker side of 20th century culture, it's right up there with "1984" and "Keep the Aspidistra Flying."

As for "The Twelve Monkeys", Bruce Willis was outstanding, even Pretty Boy put in a decent performance, and the plot was plausible and creepy. Good atmosphere, too.

Back to lurking.
