Multipoint Videoconferencing Demonstrated for First Time Over a High-speed
(Business Wire 07/14 09:15:09)
Mobile Network

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

WARWICK, Warwickshire, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14,
1999--

White Pine and NEC Research & Development Group Join Forces for
Ground-Breaking Mobile Multimedia Conference

White Pine Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: WPNE), a leading provider of
multimedia conferencing applications for the Internet and intranets,
and Telecom MODUS, a joint venture between NEC Corporation of Japan
and ERA Technology Ltd. in the UK, today announced the first mobile
multipoint videoconference over an IP network.
Telecom MODUS, a leader in the design and development of advanced
3rd Generation mobile communications, provided the infrastructure for
this demonstration using a radio base station and mobile terminals.
Each of the mobile endpoints was equipped with White Pine's
CU-SeeMe(R) Pro client software for videoconferencing. White Pine's
MeetingPoint(TM) conference server hosted the multipoint conference.
Today's demonstration is a prototype for the future capability of
mobile communications. This ground-breaking technology demonstration
is a first for high-speed mobile videoconferencing and shows how 3rd
Generation networks can deliver a full range of multimedia
applications and services.
"We are pleased to be working with White Pine on this
breakthrough technology showcase," said Dr. Alan Carr, technical
director of Telecom MODUS. "Our W-CDMA system is designed with
applications such as multimedia in mind. This demonstration shows that
it is now a practical reality to support mobile, high-speed
videoconferencing."
In the future, users will be able to do fully interactive,
multipoint videoconferencing without being tied to a physical network.
W-CDMA is a wireless wideband networking technology that sends traffic
over a common radio channel. 3rd Generation networks are designed to
provide mobile users with a range of multimedia services such as video
telephony. Current 2nd Generation networks provide conventional voice,
fax and data services. In addition to today's multipoint conferencing
demonstration, Telecom MODUS has completed mobile demonstrations for
Voice over IP, high-speed Web browsing and mobile videoconference
calls at transmission rates up to 384 kbps.
"This showcase with Telecom MODUS is an important step in
demonstrating White Pine's client/server conferencing technology
within the complete multimedia communications network," said Pascal
Bellin, European sales director for White Pine Software. "Our
conferencing technologies are a key component of applications such as
mobile telephony, Voice over IP, and call center solutions, as well as
videoconferencing and streaming."
The MeetingPoint server is a standards-based software product
that enables real-time multipoint group conferencing over an IP
network using the H.323 protocol. CU-SeeMe Pro is a low-cost desktop
videoconferencing client for use in business, government and
educational institutions.
