Gary -
Thanks for the clarification.
I didn't realize that Tag and MPLS were different things.
I thought that Tag was MPLS compliant.

Gary;
Responding to your comment: “MPLS in the BPX 8650 does not require hardware..just the right level of firmware in the BXM module.”

Tag Switching on the BPX (or MPLS, as Cisco has recently changed all their marketing data to read) DOES involve add-on hardware.

Follow along:

1) MPLS support is only found in IOS and IOS can't be loaded on the BXM cards.

2) All Stratacom-originating products (BPX, MGX, etc) cannot run IOS as their base software code; they require the presence of a IOS-capable product…ala…an external cisco router (usually a 7200 to be specific) The Stratacom products would have to be re-engineered in order to support IOS - this is something Cisco will not (can not?) do

3) The BPX 8650 is one of 3 BPX models. This "Family" was simply a renaming/repackaging of exisitng Cisco product. The BPX in question is the BPX 8650. It is marketed as their IP+ATM switch and measures 28” high, or 5.25” higher than the base BPX shelf, the BPX 8620. Ironically, a 7200 router is 5.25” high. In the BPX data, this external 7200 router called a Label Switch Controller or LSC.

4) “The BPX 8650 label switch combines a BPX switch with a separate router controller (Cisco Series 7200 or 7500 router)” - cisco.com

Again, you ARE wrong...I was not :)
