Multiprotocol Label Switching

Service Providers to Benefit from New
Functionality
By Bruce Davie, Cisco Fellow, Cisco Systems, Inc.

Cisco shipped its first release of Multiprotocol
Label Switching (MPLS) in March 1998 and in
recent months has been active in standardizing this
technology at the Internet Engineering Task Force
(IETF). Several new MPLS features to become
available this year will deliver new capabilities to
service provider networks. In this article, Cisco
Fellow Bruce Davie explains how MPLS provides
a variety of benefits, including support for virtual
private network (VPN) services, traffic
engineering, and IP+ATM integration.

bgg,

IP Navigator is still shipping and is profitable. The network management product that differentiates ASND/LU is called Navis (Naviscore, navisextend, etc.).

Clarification: NavisCore and NavisXtend use IP Navigator to scale ATM. Also, Lucent bought IP Navigator.
