MSFT's deferred (actually "unearned") revenue comes legitimately from obligations that MSFT has not yet fulfilled subsequent to the sale of its Windows or Office software. VSIO already carries deferred revs on its balance sheet, running at approximately 20% of reported quarterly revenue. They stem from deferral of upgrade revs as well as maintenance and services. I expect they will see a deferred revenue increase when they start coupon ahead of the product releases. But that's only temporary. Windows for MSFT creates a lot of deferred revenue, given that they are always promising new functionality for the operating system.
