<Jean - re:Isn't anybody surprised that Intel, from the same quarter last year, which was .33, they hit .51 ?

That's a 54% Increase in profits, is that not impressive for such a huge company ?

I do not understand why guidance to analysts is so high, and the stock goes lower on missing first call / "whisper" earnings...

What am I missing here ?>

What you are missing is that the $.33 number is for a very depressed 2Q, 1998. Guess what the earning were in Q1, 1997? $.55. So after ten quarters the earnings are down 8%.

Jean,

<That's a 54% Increase in profits, is that not impressive for such a huge company ? >

Part of this is due to the fact that 1998's 2Q was not stellar, but it is impressive none the less, especially for such a large company as you pointed out. Intel reported excellent record earnings and more importantly continues to show strong long term growth. The compounded average growth rate of Intel's 2Q for the past five years is a very impressive 23%. The full year 5 year compounded growth rate is even more impressive at around 29% (assuming Intel hits around 2.30 for this year).
