I know I'm still a relative "newby", but wont it take 10 100 meg tapes (at least) to back up a one gig hard drive? (Considering the drive may be full)

That didn't take long! I read my post in the 'chain' and wondered how long it would take for someone to catch my brain-fade.

The complete answer is: It depends. As we know, most backup software is able to compress files about half their 'normal' size. As well, backup software eliminates disk granularity.

Disks have a minimum file size which depends on cluster size, which in turn depends on File Allocation Table (FAT) size. (16 bit or 32 bit FATs in Windows) Many small files on a BIG disk with 16 bit FAT would consume a huge amount of disk resources, most of which would be wasted. Backup software eliminates this waste; hence, a gig of disk would fit on fewer than ten 100 meg tapes. I'd expect four would do it, and five for sure: Six to be safe.

Sorry I wasn't complete the first time through. For now, I'll blame it on the tiny window SI provides limiting my ability to see the big picture when I post.

P.S. I've been signing posts 'Cheerios', and thought I'd try a different cereal for a change.

P.P.S. My last post today. I'll check SI tomorrow.
