Such a method should be easy to provide.
'Norton Utilities' has a 'Move Wizard'
which does what you described. I used it to move
a program from my HD to a ZIP. Haven't tried the
'Transport Wizard' yet. It replicates a program
to another computer.

Downloading music is at its infancy.
[judging by the NYT article]. It won't
take over anytime soon.
