"Takeover"...
Despite what some SI members say, it's the stockholders, ultimately, who decide whether a company accepts a takeover offer. No Chairman or CEO can say: "The company is not for sale" and get away with it (unless he/she has voting control of the stock).

God forbid anyone should suggest that there might be a better cross-platform media player than Real's!

The fact of the matter is, Real has the eyeballs/earholes and pretty savvy management. Quality doesn't matter (obviously) and in terms of this company as an investment, I see no reason for it not to succeed for the next couple of years and remain dominant.

Apple has fought this battle before (better technology, lower market share). Whether or not they win the business battle this time is hard to call. My guess is probably not They'll take their share and make what they can out of it. This approach hasn't served them poorly in the past. If they were to spin off QuicktTime, it's would be a different game, but I don't think that's likely.

Real will do fine. My concern is that people will, once again, think that they are getting the "best stuff," based on the quantity of crap available. It's TV sitcoms all over again. QuickTime might just be the HBO for online media and leave the dreck to the Real "networks."

Worse things could happen for everyone,

Dirk
