C&W HKT <0008.HK> readies broadband convergence HONG KONG, July 14 (Reuters) - Cable & Wireless HKT said it was gearing up for convergence of interactive television and Internet services on the broadband network by bringing broadband Internet access services direct to personal computer users. Cable & Wireless HKT IMS's chief executive officer, Allen Ma, said the company would invest HK$500 million between now and the end of 1999 to enhance its broadband network coverage to more than 80 percent of the market from 75 percent. The company on Wednesday launched a new service package of NETVIGATOR 1.5M Ultra Line at a monthly fee of HK$298, including 20 hours free usage a month. The new service will allow PC users to directly access the Internet through a broadband Internet connection at up to 1.5 Mbps, or 30 times faster than the existing modem dial-up connection. Currently only existing interactive television (iTV) subscribers can access the Internet through the broadband Internet Connection. "The offer of this new service is a milestone to our upcoming launch of another broadband service, jointly developed by the group and Microsoft, in October," Ma told a news conference. "Those customers who use our 1.5M Ultra Line can easily access the new services. "It is a step forward for the convergence. In future, iTV and broadband Internet services will group into a bundle," Ma added. The telecom group said in March it would collaborate with Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> in developing consumer-focused multimedia and Internet applications and services in Hong Kong. Ma said the number of its broadband Internet users had increased by 2,000 each month. Cable & Wirless HKT said its broadband Internet access service via the iTV platform had 17,000 users at the end of June. The number of iTV users is more than 80,000, and its dial-up customer base has reached 340,000. Its Internet service provision unit NETVIGATOR received two million pageviews per day. Ma said he expected to see the number of broadband Internet subscribers to increase by three to four times the existing 17,000 users by the end of the group's fiscal year in March 2000. Ma said a strong debut performance of China.com Corp <CHINA.O> on Nasdaq on Tuesday had given the group confidence that it would be well received if it decided to spin off its Internet businesses. But he emphasised that a spin-off was just one among proposals to enhance shareholders' value. Shares of the Internet portal China.com more than tripled as its initial public offering debuted on Tuesday and closed at US$67.12 compared with its US$20 offering price. Shares of Cable & Wireless HKT fell HK$0.5 or 2.59 percent to end at HK$18.80 on Wednesday. REUTERS Rtr 04:55 07-14-99
