China to Enhance Internet Development

BEIJING (July 14) XINHUA - The Chinese government will provide a
better environment for Internet development in the country, an official
with the Ministry of Information Industry ( MII) said here today.

A report on Internet development released today by the China Internet
Network Information Center said Chinese Internet users are concentrated
mainly in large and developed cities and provinces such as Beijing,
Shanghai, and Guangdong Province in south China.

However, the number of users in most remote areas is lower than 1
percent, the report said.

Internet surfers are most dissatisfied with slow net-surfing speeds,
high fees, and insufficient information, according to the report.

Educational and technological information and medical, cultural, and
tourism information are in short supply on the 'Net, some users
complain.

Chen Yin, director of the development and planning section of MII, said
that band width, a key indicator of Internet capacity, does not meet
users' demand. Related departments are making efforts to catch up with
international standards in this regard in a bid to increase surfing
speed, he said.

China slashed telecommunications fees in March this year, but the
payment system still has room for improvement, Chen said. He did not
rule out the possibility that China may cut down related fees in the
near future.

He said China's security department has stepped up efforts to establish
network and information security systems, and China will come up with a
schedule early next century to provide all primary and secondary
schools in China with Internet access. Enditem 14/07/99 10:56 GMT
