Funny I am trying to make a point about telecom infrastructure in China and I saw your comments.
Here I am in Taiwan watching this china ipo with amazement. I don't know about www. china ,com but I know www. taiwan, com is not widely used here.
In terms of internet usage, Taiwan is as advanced as the US with cable modems being heavily promoted. I went to a telecom show here a few days ago, and saw several computers with dsl connection, I used one and signed up on gnet with amazing speed, the modem proudly displays "made by Cisco" Dsl will be available next month.
US investors give china a valuation similar to aol, thinking this is the Chinese aol. But the success of aol is based not only on a solid management team but also our infrastructure. Without the basic dial-up through the telephone lines in every house, aol would not have been what it is today.
In China even in major cities like Shanghai, telephone service is not common.
Let me further explain what "sharing telephones " means. In major cities, you will see a booth manned by someone whose responsibility is answering incoming phone calls and locate the person that the caller wants. If you want to make a phone call , you go to the booth and pay the guy.
Twenty years ago, perhaps thirty years ago, Coke went into the CHines market reasoning that with the huge population, if everyone consumes one Coke a day, Coke will be amply rewarded.
Well, you don't need any infrastructure to enjoy a coke.
